USDA-CSREES National Water Conference Feb 3-7, 2008 Water
Coordinators Leadership Seminar TITLE: Making Collaboration Work As a Water Quality Coordinator, you are likely working in a decision arena that involves an increasing number of people and organizations competing for ever scarcer resources. Since the 1990's, 'collaboration' has been touted as a new method of organizational behavior and a leadership style that brings about lasting results and win/win solutions to complex problems. But what is collaboration, really? Is it different from cooperation and coordination? How do you decide collaboratively? Do you give up your authority to decide when you collaborate? When should you collaborate? Isn't the collaborative process a pain in the neck? Collaboration can work for you if you understand why, when, and how to engage others in joint decision making. In this session you will learn the factors that affect successful collaboration, and how to shape those factors to improve collaborative success. You will also be introduced to some basic approaches to collaborative decision making that can improve your ability to interact with peers, negotiate better deals, and avoid needless conflict. |
