Speakers:

Dr. Bob Howarth, Cornell University
Overview of Nitrogen and Coastal Waters

Dr. Michelle Wander, University of Illinois
Soil and Plant Testing For Reducing Nitrogen Losses from Croplands

Dr. Jane Frankenberger, Purdue University
Managing Nitrogen Losses From Agricultural Drainage:

Dr. Peter Groffman, University of Georgia
Edge of field Sinks

Dr. Mark David, University of Illinois
In-Stream Losses

This symposium will highlight recent advances in understanding and managing nitrogen losses from rural and agricultural lands – and will offer suggestions to meet the research and extension challenges that must be addressed to reduce the risk of watershed nitrogen export.
Speakers will discuss issues related to source controls, specifically: improvements in soil and plant testing to match applications to crop needs; and advances in technologies to improve application timing and precision. The potential for nitrogen removal at the field and watershed scale will also be examined. New research on the applicability and
constraints of edge-of-field practices such as bioreactors and artificial wetlands will be highlighted. At the watershed scale,
speakers will address how to assess and possibly enhance the potential of “sinks” such as riparian zones and in-stream processes that may remove nitrogen as it travels towards receiving waters.
