Hands-On Training for Wastewater Operators

Who needs the training?

In 1999, a new rule became effective requiring all certified wastewater system operators to complete 6 hours of approved continuing education annually to maintain their operator licenses. The following operators are subject to this rule:

• Wastewater Grades 1-4 • Collection Grades 1-4 • Subsurface Operators • Spray Irrigation Operators • Residuals (Biosolids) Operators • Physical/Chemical System Operators.

To meet this training need . . .

NC State University and the NC Cooperative Extension Service have developed a unique training center to educate wastewater system operators. The Land Application Training and Demonstration Center of the Soil & Water Environmental Technology Center is a hands-on training facility. The Training Center offers specially designed courses for operators of land application systems (spray and residuals). However, other wastewater operators and professionals in related fields (e.g., system designers, golf course and nursery irrigation operators, regulatory and technical assistance staff, and government officials) would also find this training useful.

Why the training is needed...

In addition to satisfying the regulatory requirement to obtain continuing education credit, training programs are an efficient and inexpensive way to stay current with changes in environmental regulations and technologies. Operators can build upon their knowledge and expertise, helping them to remain competitive in the marketplace. The informal field setting promotes the exchange of ideas and information among participants - a real benefit for folks who do not often get a chance to talk with other operators from across the state.

What can I expect from my training?

The training facility features full scale, operational land application and irrigation systems and spreading and injection equipment, including conventional and newly developed models. Participants will learn through hands-on demonstrations how to manage and operate land application systems to apply wastewater and biosolids while protecting the environment. Participants will learn to compare design calculations to actual measured application rates, prepare equipment to deliver prescribed rates, and trouble-shoot equipment operations.

The Training Center will provide daylong courses. Certified operators who attend one of these courses will receive 6 hours of continuing education credit towards recertification -the total amount required annually. The Land Application Training and Demonstration Center is an approved training sponsor of the Water Pollution Control System Operator Certification Commission (WPCSOCC) of the North Carolina Division of Water Quality.

Facility Location & Directions

Take Raleigh’s Beltline (I-40/440) to Lake Wheeler Road on the south side of Raleigh. Head SOUTH on Lake Wheeler Road (away from downtown Raleigh) for approx. 1 mile. Turn LEFT on Inwood Road and then turn LEFT onto the gravel road before the bend in the road. Stay to the left. The road leads you downhill and back up again as it turns to the left. Pass the Animal and Poultry Waste Management Center Processing Facility on your right (red roof building). Take a left onto the farm path leading to the pole barn with the red roof. The pole barn is the training site.

Designing Wastewater Irrigation Systems

September 16-17, 2003

About This Course

Whether you specialize in residential, municipal, industrial, or animal wastewater, this course will help you design more efficient and longer lasting spray irrigation systems for your customers.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed especially for soil scientists and professional engineers and others who evaluate and design spray irrigation wastewater systems. Other professionals who would find this course valuable include: spray irrigation system operators, municipal and industrial managers who want to learn more about spray irrigation, and environmental health professionals.

Fee: $235

University Biosecurity Protocol

In an effort to prevent foot and mouth disease among our livestock, the university now requires that all visitors to field sites must not have traveled outside the United States for at least 14 days prior to the course date. Some international travel may be allowed. Please call if your international travel conflicts with your chosen course date.

Instructors:

Karl Shaffer is an Extension Associate specializing in waste management in the Soil Science Department at NCSU. He has worked in the soil and wastewater industry for 22 years, and has been instrumental in the development of North Carolina’s initial programs for training wastewater operators including curriculum development, manual writing, and instruction.

Gus Simmons, P.E., is an environmental engineer and project manager with Cavanaugh & Associates. He has worked in numerous capacities with municipal, industrial, and animal waste mangement system design and permitting.

What others are saying about our training...

"The hands-on approach is much easier to understand than any classroom courses I have taken."

"Getting straight, honest information, whether good or bad."

"This is an excellent place to learn about waste system operation and management."

"This training is well worth the trip to the Land Application Training and Demonstration Center in Raleigh."

"It is real and applicable to my operation."

"Informal setting is great for questions, with a good instructor to student ratio."
