2008 Series of Hands-On Training for...

Spray Irrigation and Residual Wastewater
Operator Workshops
North Carolina State University
About
the Workshops
Who needs the training?
In 1999, a rule became effective requiring all
certified wastewater system operators to complete 6 hours of approved continuing education annually to
maintain their operator licenses. The following operators are subject
to this rule:
• Wastewater Grades 1-4 • Collection Grades 1-4
• Subsurface Operators • Spray Irrigation Operators • Residuals (Biosolids) Operators • Physical/Chemical
System Operators.
To meet this training need . . .
NC State University and the NC Cooperative Extension
Service have developed a unique training facility to educate wastewater
system operators. The Land Application Training and Demonstration Facility
of the Soil & Water Environmental Technology facility is a hands-on
training facility. The Training Facility offers specially designed courses
for operators of land application systems (spray and residuals). However,
other wastewater operators and professionals in related fields (e.g.,
system designers, golf course and nursery irrigation operators, regulatory
and technical assistance staff, and government officials) would also find
this training useful.
Why the training is needed...
In addition to satisfying the regulatory requirement
to obtain continuing education credit, training programs are an efficient
and inexpensive way to stay current with changes in environmental regulations and technologies. Operators can build
upon their knowledge and expertise, helping them to remain competitive
in the marketplace. The informal field setting promotes the exchange of
ideas and information among participants
- a real benefit for folks who do not often get a chance to talk with
other operators from across the state.
What can I expect from my training?
The training facility features full scale, operational
land application and irrigation systems and spreading and injection equipment,
including conventional and newly developed models. Participants will learn
through hands-on demonstrations how to manage and operate land application
systems to apply wastewater and biosolids while protecting the environment.
Participants will learn to compare design calculations to actual measured
application rates, prepare equipment to deliver prescribed rates, and
trouble-shoot equipment operations.
The Training Facility will provide daylong courses.
Certified operators who attend one of these courses will receive 6 hours
of continuing education credit towards recertification -the total amount
required annually. The Land Application Training and Demonstration Facility
is an approved training sponsor of the Water Pollution Control System
Operator Certification Commission (WPCSOCC) of the North Carolina Division
of Water Quality.
Spray
Irrigation and Residual Wastewater Operator Workshops
The following four classes are approved for 6 hours continuing education
renewal credit for all wastewater operators of any type or grade.
Option 1 - May 28, 2008
FULL
Wastewater Facility Tour - Town of Bailey and Town of Elm City wastewater
spray irrigation facilities – design, management, irrigation system
operation and management, lagoon operation and management, soil and waste
sampling.
Note: Class will begin at the Bailey
Cafe, 12544 Hanover St., Bailey, NC
Option 2 – October 1, 2008
Land Application Training and Demonstration Facility –operation
and maintenance for small spray irrigation and drip irrigation wastewater
systems. System components such as tanks, pumps, filters, disinfection,
and distribution equipment will be covered.\
Option 3 - October 22, 2008
Wastewater Facility Tour - Carolina Turkey Poultry Processing Facility-
wastewater treatment system with solids screening, equalization tank,
polymer addition, dissolved air flotation, aerated lagoon, chlorination,
and spray irrigation with center pivots and big guns. Treatment and irrigation
system operation, management, and troubleshooting will be discussed.
Option 4 - November 19, 2008
Land Application Training and Demonstration Facility – this class
will be a classroom/field session covering a variety of wastewater residuals
management topics such as sampling, equipment calibration, record keeping,
site management, and a visit to a local operating land application site.
Fee: $95

Designing
Wastewater Irrigation Systems
October 14-16, 2008
About this Course
Whether you specialize in residential, municipal,
industrial, or animal wastewater, this course will
help you design more efficient and longer lasting spray irrigation systems
for your customers.
Who Should Attend
This course is designed especially for soil
scientists and professional engineers and others
who evaluate and design spray irrigation wastewater systems. Other professionals
who would find this course valuable include: spray irrigation system operators,
municipal and industrial managers who want to learn more about spray irrigation,
and environmental health professionals.
Instructors
Karl Shaffer
is an Extension Associate specializing in waste
management in the Soil Science Department at NCSU. He has worked in the
soil and wastewater industry for 29 years, and has been instrumental in
the development of North Carolina’s initial programs for training wastewater
operators including curriculum development, manual writing, and instruction.
Gus Simmons, P.E., is an environmental engineer
and project manager with Cavanaugh & Associates. He has worked in
numerous capacities with municipal, industrial, and animal waste management
system design and permitting.
What others are saying about our training...
"The hands-on approach is much easier to
understand than any classroom courses I have taken."
"Getting straight, honest information, whether
good or bad."
"This is an excellent place to learn about
waste system operation and management."
"This training is well worth the trip to the
Land Application Training and Demonstration Facility in Raleigh."
"It is real and applicable to my operation."
"Informal setting is great for questions,
with a good instructor to student ratio."
