Introduction to Decentralized Wastewater
May 20, 2008 - Fletcher
This course is designed for those with little or no
experience in the wastewater field. This is a very basic, introductory
course on wastewater. The course will introduce you to the fundamentals
of decentralized wastewater treatment. Only in the last 10 years has
USEPA acknowledged that septic systems (AKA decentralized wastewater
treatment and dispersal systems) are a viable and accepted method of
our national wastewater infrastructure. For those who have limited background
in the field, this course will introduce you to the underlying concepts
of decentralized wastewater. It will present information on the evolution
of the concept, details on types of systems used in North Carolina,
how systems work, and, perhaps most importantly, the role of system
O&M and management. Even if you have a background in the field,
this course will help pull many aspects of the profession together.
This one-day course is an excellent refresher for those who have some
on-site training either in a classroom or OJT. This program is also
a perfect introduction for individuals with no previous experience in
on-site systems looking for a quick way to learn the fundamentals of
this complex field. The course will also help you if you plan to take
the operator school, the inspector school or any of the introductory
examinations offered in the field.
Who Should Attend
Time of sale inspectors, homeowners, public health agents,
realtors, city or county planners, and developers. Anyone who would
like to know more about residential, on-site wastewater treatment and
has little or no previous exposure to the subject.

110: Installation Field Practicum for Basic Gravity Systems
NCOWCICB Approved: 6-hour
course for Grade Level I
April 3, 2008 - Plymouth
June 25, 2008 - Raleigh
Overview:
In this one-day field practicum, you will learn how to layout a system
in the field. You will see example installations in the classroom
of various gravity flow systems. Finally, you will either travel to
a site where a system is being installed (or was recently installed)
or will observe and participate in an installation experience at a
training site. This will give you a front row seat at a live installation
and a chance to learn from highly experienced installers and inspectors.
In the event of wet weather that precludes installation (or observation)
of a system that day, we may defer the field practicum to another
day.
Who Will Benefit:
Installers, service providers and environmental health specialists.
Objectives:
1. Get a real life field experience while learning how to install
tanks, outlet filters, risers, gravity distribution devices and drainfield
trenches consisting of selected trench media.
2. Be introduced to the principles of environmental health needed
when using a Construction Authorization permit to layout a gravity
flow septic system on a building lot.
3. Learn how the health agency will inspect the final installation
of gravity distribution systems.
4. Understand the importance of safety in the field when installing
septic tanks and other gravity system components.
Prerequisites:
Prior to attending Install 110, participants are expected to:
1. Understand the basics of on-site system design without becoming
a designer.
2. Have a thorough knowledge of the technology types used in on-site
systems and the basics of wastewater treatment using them.
3. Understand the classroom instruction in Install 100 regarding how
to install gravity distribution systems.
4. Note that this is not a heavy equipment operation course. It is
a septic system field installation course. While you will observe
principles of construction and safety during this course, you will
not be operating the heavy equipment itself in this training program.
Hence, if you have never operated heavy equipment before, then you
may wish to gain first-hand experience in equipment operation separately
in an apprenticeship. Also, many local Community Colleges offer significant
hands-on heavy equipment operator training programs.
