Installation of Construction Site
Erosion & Sediment Devices

A Hands-on Workshop

Workshop is Full. If you are interested in being placed on a wait list, or to be notified of a future course, please complete and submit the registration form.

About the Course

Training on the development of erosion and sediment control plans is widely available, but proper installation of these devices is just as critical as a good plan. This workshop is designed for people who actually install these devices.

Have you ever been on a site and seen silt fence installed incorrectly or BMPs inundated with sediment? Are you ready to learn the “ins and outs” of BMP installation and have fun while you’re doing it? Have you hired people recently who could use some training on proper installation of typical construction site BMPs?

Attendees Will:
- Learn what the properly installed devices should look like and the common failures in their installation.
- Learn how to install the most common devices by actually installing them.
- Learn how to install devices which are alternatives to common rock systems.

Prizes will be awarded for the best installations!

Who Should Attend

_Grading and landscape contractors and staff
_Erosion and sediment control inspectors
_Enforcement staff

Lead Instructors

RICH MCLAUGHLIN is an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist at North Carolina State University, Soil Science Department. Rich joined the faculty at NC State in 1993, where his focus is on erosion, sediment, and turbidity control. Rich led the effort to establish the Sediment and Erosion Control Research and Education Facility (SECREF) at the Lake Wheeler Road Field Laboratory, where he conducts much of his research. Prior to his tenure at NC State, Rich was employed at Ciba-Geigy as a Senior Scientist. Rich's current focus is on the use of polyacrylamide in systems to reduce sediment and turbidity problems on construction sites.
MELANIE MARKUSIC is an Extension Associate at North Carolina State University, Soil Science Department and Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) In Training. She has extensive experience in determining BMP effectiveness and construction site monitoring. Her MS degree involved studying sediment basin design effects on sediment retention efficiency.
SCOTT KING is an Extension Associate at North Carolina State University, Soil Science Department. He has an MS degree in Soil Science and has been studying construction site BMP effectiveness over the last several years. He also teaches dozens of classes each year for NC DOT for the Level I and Level II Certification in erosion and sediment control.
JAN PATTERSON, PE, CPESC is an Extension Associate in the Biological and Agricultural Engineering Department at North Carolina State University. Ms. Patterson has over ten years of experience in the fields of stream restoration, water quality monitoring, and erosion and sediment control. She co-instructs a series of five workshops for the Erosion and Sediment Control/Stormwater Certification Training for the NC Department of Transportation.
