Lead Instructor

RICH MCLAUGHLIN is an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist at North Carolina State University, Soil Science Department. Rich joined the faculty at NC State in 1993, where his focus is on erosion, sediment, and turbidity control. Rich led the effort to establish the Sediment and Erosion Control Research and Education Facility (SECREF) at the Lake Wheeler Road Field Laboratory, where he conducts much of his research. Prior to his tenure at NC State, Rich was employed at Ciba-Geigy as a Senior Scientist. Rich's current focus is on the use of polyacrylamide in systems to reduce sediment and turbidity problems on construction sites.

Objectives

The stewards and watchdogs of environmental quality in North Carolina have recently focused their attention on sediment and erosion control at construction sites, often in the form of complaints and lawsuits. If you are a property owner, developer, designer or landscape architect, contractor, site foreman, or in environmental code enforcement, you need to know about technologies that will make your effort more effective, timely and less costly. To provide you with the latest in technology, we have organized this workshop to be held at the Lake Wheeler Road Field Laboratory. The field demonstration will bring you together with experts in the field as well as vendors of products and services, so that you will see the latest techniques in a realistic setting.

Tell Us What is Most Important to You:
We'd like to know what information is most important to you. Send an email to Scott King (seking3@unity.ncsu.edu) with any important topics or specific questions you have. We'll do our best to include that information in the workshop.

How You Will Benefit. . .

  • Hear about updated BMPs in the Design Manual
  • Review evaluations of many of the new devices and systems for sediment control
  • View standard and new DOT erosion and sediment control devices
  • View live demonstrations of erosion, sediment and turbidity control in the field
  • Opportunities to interact with colleagues, regulators, and researchers

  • What Others Say...

“We are fast approaching that “Need to Know” time where increased enforcement will mean big fines or mandatory dollar maintenance of BMP’s. Being able to observe actual sites using material in action helps with this.”
    Frank Brown, Owner
    CFB Contracting
    Selma, NC

“A very informative workshop. Dr. McLaughlin and his associates do a great job in Research and Development which will surely make a difference in North Carolina.”
    Kajal Parikh, Civil Engineer
    City of Burlington
    Burlington, NC

“The workshop provided comprehensive coverage of sediment and erosion control, design features, hands on approach to teaching. It is close to the real world application.”
    Dale Werenko, Civil Engineer
    Project Manager
    Cary, NC
