Executive Summary Includes an overview of training programs, map, visual tour of the facility, budget, and a recognition of our industry partners.
In 1996 the North Carolina General Assembly required all permitted animal waste management systems to be operated by a certified operator. To be certified, an operator must attend 10-hours of classroom training, pass an exam and pay an annual fee. Certified operators must also acquire 6-hours of continuing education credits every three years to remain certified. To meet this training need, extension specialists and county agents have developed over 30 different courses lasting 0.5 to 6 hours to provide recertification training opportunities to over 4,000 certified animal waste system operators in North Carolina.
In 1998, North Carolina State University developed a unique training center to educate operators of land application systems. The Land Application Training and Demonstration Center is a hands-on training facility dedicated to educate animal waste, as well as municipal, industrial and septage waste applicators. Daylong courses are scheduled throughout the year to provide waste system operators with 6-hours of continuing education credits. Full-scale irrigation systems and spreading equipment are used to demonstrate how land application systems can properly be managed to apply manure, biosolids and industrial residuals while protecting the environment.
In July, 2000 the Land Application Training and Demonstration Center was recognized as a Blue Ribbon Extension Program by the American Society of Agricultural Engineers, and in November 2000 the Center was recognized as an Outstanding Outreach and Public Service Facility by the NC Irrigation Society..
