NEW 2008 Hands-on...
Land Application Training for Operators of

Animal Waste Systems

A program of the
Soil & Water Environmental Technology Center
at North Carolina State University

Why the training is needed...

In 1996, the North Carolina General Assembly required all permitted animal waste management systems to be operated by a certified operator. To be certified, an operator must attend 10 hours of classroom training, pass an exam and pay an annual fee. Certified operators must also acquire 6 hours of continuing education credits every three years to remain certified. To meet this training need, NC State University and the NC Cooperative Extension Service have developed a unique training facility to educate wastewater operators. The Land Application Training and Demonstration Facility is a "hands-on" training facility. Full-scale irrigation systems and spreading equipment will be used to demonstrate how land application systems can be properly managed to apply animal manure while protecting the environment. In 2008, the center will offer daylong courses for animal waste operators and technical specialists. Certified operators who attend these courses will receive 6 hours of continuing education credits toward recertification — the total amount required.

This year, additional options will be offered to help producers with compliance of new state and federal animal waste systems permits.

Who needs the training?
These training classes are for persons who are seeking continuing education credits as Animal Waste System operators. This training will be useful for:

  • operators of animal waste management systems
  • extension agents
  • technology design specialists
  • farmers and system installers

What should I bring?
Wear field clothes, and bring rain gear. Please be prepared to spend a majority of the day in the field.

What can I expect from my training?
The training programs will include hands-on demonstrations of conventional and newly developed land application systems. Training participants will learn to compare design calculations to actual measured application rates; to prepare irrigation systems and solids slurry application equipment to deliver prescribed rates; and to troubleshoot equipment operations. Irrigation demonstrations will include a solid set irrigation system with small and large bore sprinklers, a hose-reel type traveling gun, a traveling boom sprayer, and a center pivot system. A designated area will be used for training operators in the proper operation, calibration, and maintenance of solids and slurry application equipment. The site will feature several equipment models in order to expose participants to a wide range of available technology.

Each course offers classroom discussions as well as full-scale, field demonstrations of waste treatment and application systems. Participants will complete hands-on-training designed to enhance their understanding of these systems. Through education and demonstration, participants will be better equipped to operate animal waste management systems in harmony with the environment.
