Purpose

The Analytical Spectroscopy Services Laboratory provides method development and consultation services regarding elemental analysis, metal speciation, and sample digestion of unusual sample matrices for the research faculty, staff, and graduate students of the North Carolina State University Research community.

The goal of the ASSL is to help researchers develop 'routine' methods for new and challenging materials. Once this is satisfied, the samples can then be submitted at lower cost through our Environmental and Agricultural Testing Service Laboratory (EATS).

Instrumentation

The ASSL laboratory houses two spectrometers including:

  • ICP-Emission Spectrometer
elemental

The Perkin Elmer 2000 Dual View spectrometer offers multi-elemental analysis using axial and dual views, with detection limits ranging from ppb to low ppm levels for most elements.

  • ICP-Mass Spectrometer
elemental

The Varian 820 ICP-Mass Spectrometer features Varian's unique collision reaction interface (CRI) system, which provides simple, routine removal of troublesome spectroscopic interferences. The ability to auto-tune all instrument parameters, including CRI gases, greatly increases instrument productivity.

Metal speciation is performed using a Prostar 210 delivery system and a 410 auto-sampler, with the mass spectrometer as a detector. Detection limits range from sub-ppb to ppb levels for elemental analysis and metal speciation. Varian 820 ICP-Mass Spectrometer and LC Speciation Unit

Sample Submittal

All requested analytical services require an analysis request form with an account number and signature of Department Head. Anyone requesting an analytical service is encouraged to contact the laboratory before submitting a request form to discuss the nature of their request, possible safety issues dealing with their sample material and selection of proper sample storage vials. Analyses are generally done on a first-come, first-serve basis. Early submittal of sample analysis requests is critical if analyses are required to meet project deadlines or completion of student thesis research.

NOTE: For soil testing, nematode assays, and plant/waste/solution analyses available to the citizens of North Carolina, please contact the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Agronomic Division, 4300 Reedy Creek Road, Raleigh, NC;
