How to Control Turbidity on Construction Sites

There is increasing pressure on construction site managers to reduce the off-site impacts of stormwater runoff on streams, lakes, and estuaries adjacent to their projects.   Traditional erosion and sediment control measures, even when properly installed and maintained, will often release highly turbid water to the environment. Increasing scrutiny and regulation of these discharges is driving developers to seek cost-effective practices to address the turbidity that standard sediment traps and basins cannot capture.  Polymer systems developed in or adapted from water treatment, mining, and agricultural applications have been adapted for use on construction sites and can bring runoff turbidity to acceptable levels, often two orders of magnitude lower. This workshop will provide participants with the background and knowledge to implement a wide range of methods to reduce turbidity in construction site stormwater.

The workshop is designed to provide practical information on the use of polymers for professionals involved in designing and managing erosion, sediment, and turbidity control on construction sites.

Erosion and Sediment Control and Stormwater Certification Program for NCDOT Projects

Courses

Level I: Erosion & Sediment Control/Stormwater Inspector/Installer

This course is designed for those who directly supervise crews who install erosion and sediment control on construction sites. The course emphasizes the function and proper installation of best management practices used by NC DOT to minimize or control erosion and sedimentation.

Level II: Erosion & Sediment Control/Stormwater Site Management

This one day course is designed for those who supervise, run or direct grading work, culvert replacement work, and bridge construction work over rivers and streams. This course will cover permit requirements, roles and responsibilities, applicable specifications, and interpretation and best management practices to minimize or control erosion and sedimentation.

Level III-A: Design of Erosion and Sediment Control Plans

This one-day course is for those engineers and advanced level technicians who are involved with the design of erosion and sediment control (E&SC) plans on NCDOT projects. Level III-A emphasizes selection and design of appropriate best management practices (BMPs) and proper location of BMPs.

Level III-B: Design of Erosion and Sediment Control for Reclamation Plans

This one-day course is for those engineers and advanced level technicians who are involved with the design of erosion and sediment control (E&SC) plans specific to Reclamation Plans on NCDOT projects. Level III-B emphasizes selection and design of appropriate best management practices (BMPs) for above and below watertable borrow sites as well as waste sites.
