FERTILIZERS AND SOIL FERTILITY

Fertilizer

Any substance that is added to the soil to supply those elements required in the nutrition of plants

Fertilizer material or carrier

Any substance that contains one or more of the essential elements.

Mixed Fertilizer

A mechanical or chemical combination of two or more fertilizer materials and which contains two or more essential elements.

Complete Fertilizer

It contains the three major plant-nutrient elements - nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

Fertilizer grade

It refers to the minimum guarantee of the plant-nutrient content in terms of total nitrogen, available phosphorus pentoxide, and soluble potassium oxide (6-24-24 for example).

Fertilizer ratio

It refers to the relative percentages of nitrogen, phosphorus pentoxide, and potassium oxide (a 6-24-24 grade has a 1-4-4 ration).

Fertilizer formula

It is an expression of the quantity and analysis of the materials in a mixed fertilizer.

Filler

It is a make-weight material added to a mixed fertilizer of fertilizer material to make up the difference between the weight of the added ingredients required to supply the plant nutrients in a ton of a given analysis and 2,000 lbs.

Acid forming fertilizer

It is capable of increasing the acidity of the soil, which is derived principally from the nitrification of ammonium by soil bacteria.

Basic fertilizer

It is capable of decreasing the acidity of the soil.

nonacid-forming fertilizer

It is one that is guaranteed to leave neither an acidic nor a basic residue in the soil.

Dry bulk blending

It is the process of mechanically mixing solid fertilizer material.

Clear liquid fertilizer

It is one in which the NPK and other materials are completely dissolved.

Suspension liquid fertilizer

It is the one in which some of the fertilizer materials are suspended as fine particulates.

Fluid fertilizer

It is a clear or suspension liquid fertilizer.
