Walnut Creek Oral History ProjectPreserving Urban Wetlands

By Hannah J. and Ashlyn Y.

Wetlands are a vital part of the urban environment. They are natural, sponge-like floodplains that help absorb excess water and prevent flooding after heavy rains. Wetlands also provide habitat for a large number of native plants and animals in Raleigh. In areas where there is a lot of construction in the floodplain there can be major flooding issues, which is the case with the Rochester Heights community built near the Walnut Creek wetlands. Since wetlands are a vital part of the environment, it is important to protect them. Keeping the area clean and not littering is one easy way to help the environment. Encouraging smart growth and preventing overdevelopment is also important.
