Walnut Creek Oral History ProjectPartners for Environmental Justice

By Natalie C.

Partners for Environmental Justice (PEJ) is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to the enhancement of the Walnut Creek ecosystem and the communities of Southeast Raleigh. Originally known as Walnut Creek 2000, the name was later changed to Partners for Environmental Justice as the group continued its work into the new millennium. Dr. Norman Camp and Ed Milligan originally created the organization in 1995 to prevent flooding in nearby communities. An additional goal of PEJ has been to beautify the wetland area. Twice a year, PEJ and other community members get together to clean up the wetlands. Another major goal for PEJ is to create an environmental education center to increase awareness about the Walnut Creek wetlands. In 1998, PEJ asked Landscape Architect Professor Robin Moore of North Carolina State’s College of Design to design a wetland educational park in the undeveloped area between Garner Road and State Street north of Walnut Creek. Partners for Environmental Justice now has a “vision” for what they want this park and education center to look like. While the education center is still in the planning process, construction is expected to start in the summer of 2007.
