The Walnut Creek Education Center
By Amber M.
A major goal of Partners for Environmental Justice (PEJ) now is to work with the City of Raleigh to create an urban wetlands education center and park. The education center is to be built near the wetlands on the corner of State Street and Peterson Street. The goal of the center is to create a place for students to appreciate and learn about the value of the wetlands while bringing pride and economic development to the community. PEJ especially sees a need to open up the area of studying wetland ecosystems to schools such as Carnage Middle School, Fuller Elementary, Ligon Middle School, Washington Middle School, and colleges that are located nearby. By giving students and citizens a place to experience wetlands firsthand, PEJ hopes that this new learning center will bring positive change to a part of Raleigh that has dealt with struggles of all kinds over time. |
